The PDF toolbox
your reader forgot.

Most free PDF readers let you look at a document — not change it. Folio PDF lets you extract, rotate, reorder, password-protect, redact, annotate and sign pages right in your browser. No upload, no account, no install.

The genesis

Why I built this

"I just wanted to pull out a few pages, rotate a scan, and lock a file with a password — without paying, uploading, or installing anything."

Free, traditional PDF readers are great at one thing: reading. The moment you need to actually manipulate a document — extract a range of pages, rotate a crooked scan, or password-protect (and unprotect) a file — you hit a paywall, an upload-to-the-cloud step, or a clunky install.

So I set out to build a simple solution, with AI as my pair-programmer. The result is Folio PDF: a single HTML file that does the everyday page-manipulation jobs a reader should have shipped with — entirely on your own machine.

How it came together

From itch to app in 1–2 weeks

1
The itchFree readers can't edit pages. Paid tools want an account or your files in their cloud.
2
The approachUse AI to assemble a focused, browser-only toolbox around proven open libraries.
3
The buildOne to two weeks of iterating — viewer, page tools, protection, signing, undo/redo.
4
The resultA single offline HTML file with 37 tools. This is it.
What it does

The jobs your reader can't do

Everything happens in the browser — your files never leave your device. These are the page-level tools that started it all, plus a lot more.

Extract & organise pages

Pull out page ranges, reorder by drag, duplicate, delete, or pull pages in from another PDF.

The original itch

Rotate pages

Straighten a sideways scan 90° at a time — rotate the whole document or just the pages you pick.

The original itch

Password protect & unlock

Add or remove a password, and set print/copy/edit permissions — all locally.

The original itch

Redact

Black out sensitive text or images — including search-and-redact and a destructive mode that truly removes it.

Annotate & comment

Highlight, underline, draw, drop sticky notes and free text — with threaded comments.

Sign — for real

Drop a drawn signature, or apply a cryptographic PKCS#7 digital signature from your own certificate, in-browser.

Merge, split & convert

Combine files, split by range or bookmark, compress, flatten, grayscale, images↔PDF, and more.

A first-class reader

Continuous scroll, thumbnails, outline, full-text search with jump-to-match, dark mode and ⌘K command palette.

A working document

Run a tool, then "continue editing" the result into the next — with global undo / redo across edits.

No catch

Private by design

Folio PDF is one self-contained HTML file. Open it and everything runs locally — there is no server to send your documents to.
